Positive Self Talk

In any type of undertaking you need positive self talk at all times. Job interview, competition, exam etc you always need to tell yourself that you are going to do great and that you feel great.

From a fighters perspective, a few days prior to a fight all fighters go through weight cuts. Now this involves very little fat in your diet…actually nevermind it is the skinny anorexic models diet! haha but ok all jokes aside its a pretty shitty time. Especially because you cant eat what you want to eat and whatever you are eating you cannot have too much of it. Anyways its a ton of pressure on your mind and your mood will take a killing in the process. A simple fix. Positive Self Talk! A very simple exercise of just saying positive sentences to yourself. These sentences could be as simple as “I am feeling great today!” Thats it!

This has had profound effects on me the past few days. It may seem alittle odd at first but believe me it will change your whole day.

One positive thought in the beginning of your day will determine how the rest of your day goes.

Coffee Cup Analogy

I came across this a few days ago. Not sure who the original author of it is but it is a very interesting analogy.

Let me know what you think and feel free to comment.

A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university lecturer. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life.

Offering his guests coffee, the lecturer went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups: porcelain, plastic, glass, some plain-looking and some expensive and exquisite, telling them to help themselves to hot coffee.

When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the lecturer said: “If you noticed, all the nice-looking, expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the better cups and are eyeing each other’s cups.”

“Now, if Life is coffee, then the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, but the quality of Life doesn’t change. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee in it.”

So please, don’t let the cups drive you…enjoy the coffee instead.

The power of QUALITY conversation

A large amount of our time is spent socializing with other people. This is normal since we are social beings, without a social structure our society would seize to exist. So what do you usually talk about? Some of us don’t give this too much thought. We talk about the weather, our day, other people etc…but what about ideas? Doesn’t have to be anything specific, just an idea. Everything that ever existed begun as a tiny electrical impulse in someones mind…a thought…an idea…a creation. I briefly covered this in ‘The Power of Positive Thinking’

For about 2 years now at my part-time job I had a chance to work with a man who became a good friend of mine. We would work together for up to 6-8 hours at a time and when you’re spending that much time with someone you get to know them fairly well. Sure we could have talked about the usual shit two guys would talk about, but we went in a different route. We discussed ideas and goals.

We used to discuss what we enjoyed doing the most. Now this came at a difficult time for me because I had a severe back injury and thought my fighting career was over. Martial arts provided me with inner peace and I had dedicated most of my life to it. At the time I felt as if it was being taken away from me.

My friend enjoyed fishing. He used to tell me that he wished he could fish all day and night. The passion that he had for fishing made ME want to go fishing! I asked him a simple question “so why don’t you?” He explained that he has a mortgage, car payments you know the usual stuff we have to pay for in our lives. At this time my dream looked as if it was shattered and his looked unattainable….

Throughout months of discussing our goals and ideas. Just sharing these thoughts we had. Visualizing what we wanted to accomplish and where we wanted to be withing a certain time-frame. I discuss this in my previous blog post ‘Set a Goal, Plan, and work towards it’

Instead of talking about bullshit these discussions actually got our brains thinking in the direction we wanted to go. Whenever you put a thought or idea out there you will see different circumstances, events & people will start lining up to bring you closer to what you desire. Try it. You just have to make sure to pay close attention to the signs along the way.

Long story made a little shorter I’m all healed up and back on track with my fighting career. I even took my injury as an opportunity to start working on some projects that I set for myself. I actually opened up two businesses one of them being NerdWerk a web hosting and domain registration business and my good friend ended up opening his company which is solely dedicated to fishing. Its called AMFISH.

Don’t underestimate a conversation. A lot can come of it.

Small minds discuss people

Average minds discuss events

Great minds discuss IDEAS

Set a goal, Plan, and work hard towards it

The human mind is a very powerful tool in achieving your goals. Whether it be minor every day goals or major goal life goals and dreams. Dreaming big and having an idea of what you want is great but it is not enough.

To accomplish anything great you got to have a clear and well defined goal in mind and a plan to go along with it.

How do you do that?

First you have to think about what you want to accomplish or gain. Remember every idea and thought has the potential to become something real. Because of someones idea you are able to read my blog right now. Something to think about.

After deciding what you really want to achieve you need to come up with a plan for action. Decide on what to do first and how to proceed. Achieving your goals requires planning which you need the power of your mind for.

Now that you have a clear goal and a plan in mind next step is to visualize achieving that goal. Visualization is a powerful technique that requires some imagination. If you are having trouble doing it at first don’t worry. Practice makes perfect. High level athletes use creative visualization quite a bit to practice technique in their minds. While I was injured I could not train for almost 6 months but during that time I just kept visualizing techniques. Once I got back in the gym it did not take me too long to get back in the groove of things 🙂

Below is a short video on how to visualize

This will require discipline, patience & persistence.

Motivation is especially important in goal achievement. How can you achieve anything if you’re not motivated enough? Think about your goal, its advantages, the rewards of achieving it. All these things will have a strong emotional impact on your level of motivation.

And lastly, HARD WORK. Now that you have a set goal, a plan on how to achieve that goal the next step is just to work your ass off towards it. Whatever it may be. Good grades, more money, or being a champ. Just put in that work.
